How to add a very basic jigsaw puzzle effect to your images or photos using GIMP's built in "Jigsaw" filter. GIMP is a full featured free image creation and photo editing software. The stock installation comes with close to 50 built in image filters to create all types of neat effects. Among these we find, buried in the menu, a pattern filter called "Jigsaw" that allows us to add a jigsaw puzzle piece overlay, complete with rounded bevels.
To try it yourself, start by opening up an image or photo in GIMP.

From the menu, select "Filters>Render>Pattern>Jigsaw".

The "Jigsaw" filter options window appears. From the first section (Number Of Tiles), select how many tiles or "pieces" you wish to generate. In this case, I selected 6x5 for a total of 30 pieces. Unless your image resolution is lower than 600x400, I recommend you set a bevel width of 10px, which is the maximum for this filter. Finally, select wether you want "Square" or "Rounded" tiles or pieces and click "OK".

You should end up with something like this. Print it and let the kids cut it out and put it back together.

That's all there is to it! Thanks for reading!
