Digital cameras have changed the way most of us look at photography. The average person uses a camera to capture memories and keepsakes of loved ones, events and locations. However, there is a budding artist in many of us. Once the domain of professionals and well-to-do amateurs, digital cameras have simply made it easy and affordable for anyone to experiment and create.
For starters, with no consideration for the cost of film and processing coupled with impressive storage capacities, we can take as many snaps as we we want without having to worry about missing that “perfect” shot. Being able to see our shot instantly via the integrated LCD screen allows us to quickly decide if a particular photo is a “keeper” or if we need to try again. Even inexpensive cameras have the potential to capture some breathtaking images.
On the flip side, many people don’t bother to learn the technical aspects of photography or their cameras. Consider the picture above. This photo was taken outside on a sunny day in Auto mode. Glaring issues such as framing and focus aside, there is a notable problem with exposure that throws off color and contrast. This is the type of picture most of us take and while it may seem like an OK photo, a few minor corrections in GIMP, our free photo editing software can improve it significantly. If you don’t know what GIMP is, read the following: What is the GIMP?
Auto White Balance
One quick trick you can try is to use the Auto White Balance filter in GIMP. Auto White Balance will attempt to correct exposure issues and works relatively well in most instances. You can find this tool by clicking “Colors>Auto>White Balance” from your menu.
Comparing the original photo to the second one with Auto White Balance applied, there is a noticeable improvement in contrast and tone.
It’s hard to argue with the result!
In our next tutorial, we look at How to adjust your photos using the Levels tool. The level tool gives us similar results but with greater control over color channels and contrast.
