A step by step guide on how to remove, change or make background transparent using layer masking in GIMP.
In this follow up to GIMP – How to create and use a layer mask, we will see how to remove or alter an image background
using the mask we created in the aforementioned tutorial.
- Launch GIMP and open your original image : bg_1.jpg.
- In the Layers Panel on the right, right-click the layer and select “Add Layer Mask”.
- From the “Add Layer Mask” window that pops up, select “White (Full Opacity) and click “Add”.
- You now have a white rectangle to the right of your thumbnail on your layer in the Layers Panel. This is the layer mask.
- Open the image mask you created in the last tutorial (File>Open). bg_mask.jpg
- Press Ctrl+A to select all and Ctrl+C to copy. Return to your original image and press Ctrl+V twice. Your image mask will be pasted to your Layer mask (on the left in the Layers Panel). You’ll note that your background is now gone:
- Now we need to insert our alternate background. I will be using this image: stage.jpg. From the menu “File>Open As Layers”…
- From our Layers Panel, right click on the “Floating Selection” layer and from the menu select “Delete Layer”.
- Now select the “stage.jpg” layer and drag it below our “Background” layer.
- We end up with the following:
- With a few minor adjustments to scale, brightness and contrast and white balance to get our image to blend with our new background we get something like this:
