When I first started out making 3D models in Blender 3D, one of the biggest challenges was finding good reference material such as multi view drawings, photos and blueprints. Even when I was able to find a few “acceptable” sets, they rarely scaled well across views and generally had me guesstimating most of the time.
That was until about a year ago when I discovered The-Blueprints.com. The-Blueprints.com currently has over 40,000 reference blueprints for 3D modeling. It is by far the largest collection of free reference blueprints for 3D modeling anywhere. They have 15 categories of free blueprints including Humans, Weapons, Cars, Trucks, Tanks, Airplanes and Miscellaneous Gadgets.
Browsing through their selection, you will find tons of 2, 3, 4 and 5 view blueprints in resolutions ranging from low (200 or 200 pixels) to excellent (1200 pixels and above) in JPG format. Unregistered guests are able to download JPG blueprints to a maximum of 500x500 pixels. In order to get the higher resolution blueprints, you will have to create an account which is free and worthwhile.

The-Blueprints.com also offers 1,800+ scalable vector drawings in various formats (.AI, .EPS, .SVG, .DWG, .DXF). These drawings are to scale and generally offer 4 views. These are great for those of you who need precise references for your projects. Of course, vector drawings, unlike the .JPG blueprints, are not free but normally run in the $2.50 – $10 range.
