How To GIMP Black And White

In this tutorial we will learn some basics of working with GIMP, the free open source photo editing software.  You learn how to open an image and convert it to grayscale (black and white).

If you don't know what GIMP is or haven't installed it yet, read "GIMP - What is the GIMP?" first.

From your desktop, click “Start>Programs>GIMP>GIMP 2.0”.  Alternatively, double-click on Wilbur (GIMP mascot) icon on your desktop.

GIMP can handle virtually any image type (except for RAW) including .gif, .bmp, .jpg, .png, .tiff, etc..  To open or load an image, from the Main panel select “File>Open…” from the menu.

Navigate to your image and either click on the image once and then click “Open” or double-click the image.  The image we are using for this tutorial is titled “schooner.jpg” and can be downloaded here .

There are several ways of converting a color image to grayscale or black and white in GIMP.  In this tutorial, we’ll look at the quickest.  From the menu, select “Colors>Desaturate”.  Desaturation simply reduces color saturation for red, green and blue color channels to 0.

This dialogue window will pop up offering options for which shade of gray to use.  We’ll explore these options in a future tutorial.  For the time being, just accept the default “Lightness” and click “OK”.
