When most individuals think of 3D technology they think of odd paper glasses and large theaters. While this perception may have been true in the past, 3D technology has taken one large leap forward recently. 3D smartphones are being released to the world and have become the ultimate mobile platform for entertainment.

The 3D effect can be achieved many ways, but up until recently this technology was simply impractical to put on mobile devices. Most smartphones are currently utilizing parallax barriers to develop this effect. Essentially, different images are sent to different eyes, which trick the brain into thinking there is depth on a flat screen. It has taken years to perfect these images, but they have been worth the wait.

The sky is the limit when users have a 3D phone and a quick mobile broadband provider. Companies are sprouting up all over the web offering 3D movies, images, and shows for everyday use. Unfortunately, because of the huge amount of information required for advanced images, a great wireless connection is required to take full advantage of these high definition videos.

Due to this huge increase in popularity, smartphone manufacturers from around the world are jockeying for the lead position in this cutthroat market. One of the lead contenders at this point is LG. While LG has had somewhat of a rocky history, they have decided to jump back in the saddle. Their 4G Thrill smartphone was recently announced as AT&T's flagship 3D technology. LG has developed an entire 3D app store dubbed the "LG 3D Space" to coincide with the release as well. The phone is also able to film in 3D with dual rear-facing cameras. With a good mobile broadband at hand, owners can snap 3D films and send them off to friends and family with a single tap of the screen.

HTC is replying to the LG Thrill with their newest EVO, the EVO 3D. The original line of EVO phones have proven to be some of the most advanced smartphones ever placed on the market, and the EVO 3D is carrying on this tradition. The HTC EVO 3D has a dual core, 1.2 Ghz processor and is running Android's 2.3 Gingerbread operating system. A dual camera on the back of the phone also has the ability to capture 3D video and images. Owners are going to be clamouring for a quick mobile broadband provider as this phone will have access to YouTube’s upcoming 3D channel.

While these are only two of the leading designs for the 3D smartphone, nearly every company is looking into their own prototypes and options. The world of 3D has been around for quite some time, but with new advances in technology the next phase is to make it completely mobile.
