It seems half of the computer repairs I’ve been performing lately or laptop LCD panels. A few of them have been cracked panels from having suffered some for of drop or blow. Most of them, however, have been from damaged circuit boards. I find it more prevalent among screen sizes of 17” and up and I suspect it has to do with how people handle these larger screens. Most people don’t realize that there is a thin circuit board mounted on the back of the LCD panel and that, in most cases, it spans most of the width of the screen.
When people flip open their screens or adjust the angle, they tend to handle them from one corner which, coupled with the resistance offered by decent hinges, tends to wrench the panel (and consequently the attached circuit board). This puts some stress on the board and may eventually lead to cracks or joints coming apart and the eventual failure of your screen. Bring in your laptop for a screen replacement into most shops and you are probably looking at a $400+ service bill – so please consider this when you are handling your laptop screen. Try to use two hands to raise your screen or adjust it’s angle.
This particular laptop suffered a hard knock that cracked the panel. The reason I’m posting these pictures and link is that, most laptop screen repairs can be done in a few minutes and do not require a complete teardown. This is not the case for the HP G62 or G72. To get the LCD panel swapped out, you have to take the laptop apart all the way down.
You can find the Maintenance and Service Guide here: HP G62 Service Guide
Below, you will find photos I took of all the steps required for the teardown!
Hope this helps!
