Feeling brave and want to do something wild with your computer for a change? Try installing a new operating system! But don’t fret, we won’t push you out to sea without a lifejacket… here’s the tutorial on how to do it!
Now that Windows 7 has finally arrived, it could be a good time to backup all your files and do a clean install. Clean installs have several advantages over upgrades. First off there is no residual junk from the older Operating System, secondly, if you had any viruses or malware you can be sure they won’t survive a new installation, and thirdly… well… Windows 7 just looks good.
But hold on to your horses, not any old computer can handle Windows 7, it is this professional’s humble opinion that a machine that is more than 4 or 5 years old should not have a newer OS because of performance issues and user experience will suffer as a result.
Now, pop that DVD in the drive and let’s get installing (remember label side up! – just kidding!)
After the DVD is inserted, the computer must be restarted, the installer will load the files for Windows PE (That’s Portable Environment and no you can’t have it on a USB stick)
All files are loaded and Win PE is starting.
Here you choose the install language, time & currency format and the keyboard input.
If your happy with the settings you set earlier just click on the “Install Now” button.
The installer will now ask you some more questions before the actual installation.
After you have read the User Agreement and checked the “I accept the terms” click “Next” to continue.
On this page you have the option of upgrading but since we’re doing a clean install we’ll select “Custom”
Select the drive you wish to install Windows 7 onto.
Now the installer is doing it’s magic, this part takes a while so go grab a beer or a coffee.
In this window you can choose your first user and the computer’s name.
Here you can choose your password. Although it is not recommended you can leave it blank.
Now you can choose Windows Updates’ initial status : Updates & Help Microsoft, Updates only or Off.
Set your time zone and correct time here.
Phew almost done, if your installing Windows at home you should choose “Home Network” which gives your network a trusted status.
It is now configuring your network accordingly.
You’re in the home stretch! The installer is putting the finishing touches on your fresh install!
That’s it, you now have a computer with Windows 7! Give yourself a pat on the back!
