Getting tired of carrying a USB key with you? Wish you could access your data from any computer with Internet access? Now you can. In my quest to find a more convenient way to keep my data synchronized on multiple computers and have access to it wherever I may be, I came across a little piece of software called SpiderOak.
It is brought to us by SpiderOak Inc. a company based in Illinois, USA. and it is only available in English a this time.Features and Benefits
One of SpiderOak’s features is that you can have as many computers as you want connected to your account, although 2 or 3 will probably be enough for most users, it’s nice to know that you can have as many as you want, plus you can have access to all your files at anytime from any computer that has internet access. You only need to make your way to SpiderOak’s homepage make you login and presto! All your files for easy download.
THE feature that sold me was the zero knowledge data encryption. What it means in a nutshell is that no one on their end, not the server admins, not the technicians not even the CEO has access to your files, they are compressed and encrypted locally before upload all they see is numbers and they have no idea of what’s in it.
Should you wish share some of your files with a colleague or a friend you can also to that. So if you’re working on an important document and you want to let someone have access to the latest revision you can setup a share, give it a password and the other person can access the share through SpiderOak’s homepage.
Operating System
Linux and Mac users rejoice this product is multiplatform so you can sync your files regardless of your OS.
Cost
You might think that all these features will cost you money, well yes and no. Currently the first 2 gigabytes of data is free, after that it’ll cost you but, there is an added bonus, for each friend you refer to SpiderOak you get an extra gigabyte up to a maximum of 5 Gb total now that’s a lot of free space!
Download and Installation
Go to the SpiderOak homepage: www.spideroak.com.
Click on “Download SpiderOak” from the left menu.
The website will automatically detect your OS and will provide you with the appropriate client. Click on “Download”.
Save the file to your computer, remember where you save it for later retrieval.
Double-Click the file to open it, you may safely ignore any security warnings you get.
You are greeted by the installation wizard, click “Next” to continue.
After you have read the licence agreement and agree to it’s terms click “I Agree”.
After you have chosen a location for installation click “Next”
Choose a Start Menu folder and click “Install”
Installation should take only a few moments, click “Next” when done.
That’s it your done with the installation, when you first run SpiderOak you will need to create a username and password so follow the on-screen instruction carefully. If you have difficulty remembering passwords I suggest you read the article on LastPass.
Happy syncing!
