In this tutorial we will see how to download and install the LAME mp3 plug-in for Audacity the open source sound editor.
Out of the box Audacity does not support edition of MP3 files because of patent issues, it is available however as a plug-in for download from here. After you surfed to the web page, find the version of the Lame encoder for your operation system version, which in our case is Windows.

Save the file in any location you wish, just remember where you saved it (You’ll need to find it later).
You may safely ignore any security warnings you get.
This is the Welcome Screen, click “Next” to continue.
If you agree with with the terms of the license agreement, select “I accept the agreement” then click ‘Next” to continue.
Enter the location you wish to install the plug-in (Default is location is OK, but make a mental note where it is)
If your satisfied with the settings and are ready to install, click “Install”
Installation takes only a couple seconds, click “Finish” to exit the wizard
Now open Audacity go to Edit->Preferences (or CTRL-P for the lazy ones out there…)
In the third tab labelled “File Format” click the button “Find Library” to find the Lame Plug-In
Next a window will pop-up with a brief explanation for the plug-in, click “Yes” to find it.
Browse over to where the file is located in my case Computer->C:->Program Files (x86)->Lame for Audacity
Double-click the file to open it.
And Voila! Audacity will now be able to export to mp3 directly.
Enjoy!
