As anyone in the website or blogging business knows, strong backlinks to your site builds authority, better positioning in Search Engines, generates better paying CPC ads and will generally bring you more traffic.
Since SEO is all about growing site authority and traffic organically (i.e. free), there are many ways to get strong referral backlink from authoritative sites with a strong PR (page rank) for free. In future articles, I will cover several of the following methods in more detail.
1. Social Networking: Social Networks such as Twitter, Facebook, Digg, Reddit, Tumblr, Posterous, Yahoo Meme, LinkedIn and others offers webmasters and bloggers not only the ability to promote their site and interact with others, but posting the occasional link to an article or blog post will generally give you a PR5-PR10 backlink int the process. These are great referrals and, while using these channels requires a commitment on your part to interact with and grow your following, it tends to bring you some highly targeted traffic.
2. Article marketing and guest posts: Contributing an original article to an article marketing service or to one or several authoritative sites increases your exposure, showcases your writing chops or expertise and earns you valuable backlinks and targeted traffic. A service such as EzineArticles is a good place to start. Also, many sites such as Dodisdodat.com accept guest posts in exchange for backlinks to your site or blog. Of course, it takes some time to craft original articles but, how long does it take to build your own PR?
3. Forums: If you have an area of expertise, actively participating in a few high PR forums that allow site links in your signature is another great way to build backlinks. The advantage here is that you can build several backlinks on the backs of relatively short posts with very little time invested.
4. Comments and feedback: Leaving comments or feedback on other authoritative sites does several things. First, if the site allows dofollow or exposed site links - it's another easy way to build backlinks. In addition, useful comments can lead to discussions with various site owners which could potentially lead to all kinds of great opportunities!
5. Email signature: Including your site link in your email signature may not necessarily improve your PR or authority but it can lead to great free referrals!
These are just 5 of the more obvious strategies to link building. The one I'd like to discuss with you now, however, is also an obvious and easy to implement strategy that can garner you 20 high PR backlinks in 20 minutes or less!
Directory submissions!
Some will argue that Google is wise to abuses in article and link directories, but I submit that, if this were the case, DMOZ or Yahoo! Directory listings would not be so highly coveted. And what is the distinction between an Article Directory and a Link Directory? An article directory is a site that generally accepts excerpts and links to content that aligns with their directory's purpose. For example, Dodisdodat offers tutorials and will often submit to high PR directories such as Pixel2Life, Tutorialized and others. In the past, not only has this helped build Dodisdodat's authority but, it has also brought us thousands of highly targeted visitors.
Link directories, on the other hand, accept main site link submissions. Because of their link building focus, directories are a great way to build strong backlinks to your home page. While these may not bring you much traffic, they certainly do help boost your site authority and PR.
Some premium directories, usually with PR5 or better, will charge a fee for inclusion. In some cases the fee is a small, or smallish, one time payment. Others require monthly or annual renewal, such as Yahoo!. DMOZ is one of the oldest and few high PR open directories that are free but their submission terms are fairly stringent and approval can take up to several months, if at all.
But, there are plenty of good free directories out there that offer PR1 to PR5 backlinks and have fairly quick approval and inclusion times. These are the types of directories Directory Submission specialists use, and charge big money for, when you hire them to perform submissions for you. Generally, these specialists will charge $25 or more for submission to 50+ directories but, when you see how quickly and easily you can do this yourself for free, you'll be thinking of ways to better spend your money!
There are directory farms, owned and operated by single entities, that I've had great success with. Generally, site submissions are approved within a matter of days - not months, and because all of these directories are unique but use the same layout and scripts, submitting your site or blog across 20 of them will take you 20 minutes or less.
PrestigePremium (http://prestigepremium.com) is a PR4 directory that is part of a farm. Once you've submitted your site to this directory, work your way down the list of directories on the left hand side of the page. You'll find that all of these sites have similar layouts, the same submission script which makes submission a snap, and all of them have PR1 to PR4 ranking although most have a PR3.
Hope this helps!
