imageWhen I’m sitting at my computer working or playing, I often like to listen to some music to help keep me focused. Sometime I’ll cue up some songs from my own MP3 collection but usually I’ll dial in an Internet Radio station because they tend to have a greater variety and, maybe I’m a little old school but, I like listening to DJ banter.

I use VLC (Video Lan Player) for most video playing duties because it handles just about anything without putting up a fuss but I find it fairly weak as a music player. At one time, I used to be a big WinAmp fan – it handles music libraries and playing duties quite capably, but the newer versions of Windows Media Player has grown up a lot since the early days and I find it suits my needs quite well. But when I would find a really great Internet Radio Station, I couldn't, at first, figure out how to bookmark the internet radio stream. However, I did eventually work it out!

Read on to learn how to bookmark internet radio stations in Windows Media Player.

As for Internet Radio streams, there are tons of stations out there to suit all tastes. One of my favorites is Pirate Radio  KQLZ 100.3FM (www.kqlz.org) which plays 80’s and 90’s hard rock.  When you find a station that you’d like to listen to, there will usually be a link somewhere on the page inviting you to listen live. Some stations provide there own built in media player but most offer streams tailored for specific players such as RealPlayer, WinAmp, Quicktime or Windows Media Player. On the Pirate Radio KQLZ site, the link looks like this:

When you click that link, it brings you to a page with various streaming options for low speed or high speed internet connections and software specific streams.

Simply click on the Windows Media Icon ,

click the “Open with: Windows Media Player” option in the pop up window,

and your Windows Media Player will automatically launch and start streaming the station to your computer.

There used to be a fairly straightforward option to bookmark streaming audio in older version of Windows Media Player, but that was dropped in version 12. In this new version, rather than creating a bookmark, you simply need to save the stream as a playlist.

If you are in the “Now Playing” view, click the “Switch To Library” button…

In the Library View, click the “Play” tab on the right hand side…

Right-click on the “Live Stream” link and, from the contextual menu, select “Add to>Additional playlists…”

From the “Add to Playlist” window, click “Create Playlist”…

Use the station name to name the Playlist and click “OK”.

Now, whenever you want to listen to that station again, while in Library View, under the Playlists option on the left hand side, right click on the station name and select “Play” from the contextual menu.

That’s it! Now that you know how to bookmark Internet Radio Stations in Windows Medi Player, all you have to do is keep on rocking!
